Tackling Illegal E-Bike and Quad Bike use across Glasgow North East

The antisocial and irresponsible use of e-bikes, quad bikes and motocross bikes is hugely disruptive – and poses a safety risk to both the public and the drivers themselves.

With no regard for their own safety, or that of the public, individuals are riding these often unlicensed vehicles at excessive speeds and without lights in public places.

Week after week, I hear from constituents who have had near misses with these vehicles while walking their dogs or playing with their children in local parks. While walking around Springburn Park, I have witnessed off-road vehicles travelling far too fast across the grass and footpaths. This is not only a serious nuisance and safety concern, but it also damages the park’s surfaces and green spaces.

There is understandable anger about this behaviour and fear of another serious accident in the community, following the tragic death of David Gow in 2023, who was struck by an off-road motorbike in Lambhill.

I am regularly in discussion with Police Scotland regarding the illegal use of e-bikes and off-road vehicles, and I know this issue is high on the list of priorities for the Greater Glasgow Division. In recent weeks, the Police have told me that they have removed several vehicles from the streets and charged individuals found using them dangerously across Glasgow North East.

The police need the appropriate resources and suitable powers to properly address an issue that is affecting communities across the country. At present, the release fee following the seizure of a vehicle can be as low as £150. It is clear this is not enough of a deterrent.

I urge the Scottish Government to review these measures and strengthen enforcement action.

Please continue to raise these concerns with me, and I will do my best to ensure the issue receives the attention it deserves.
